Review: The Breach

The Breach
The Breach by Patrick Lee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Although the beginning and the way the story is told is way different, the scenario reminds me of Signal to Noise - Eric S. Nylund and the sequel A Signal Shattered, the main character, the Alien named "Wheeler" was one of the most interesting characters I read. "Whisper" seems to pursue similar goals and the idea of the Breach as a way to be given Alien Technology is so far not explained but seems similar to "Signal to noise". Although I just started it yesterday and have been doing other things I am at 37%, still very good, might be a 5star so far and I will certainly read the next book in the series.
A few nice twists, although I guessed some properties of the Breach, others came as a surprise as did the origin of of Whisper.

Highly recommended, and takes a different approach with no solution as to the origin of the Entities coming of the Breach (although it is hinted with Whisper).
Solid 5 star and I just bought the other two books in the Trilogy - Ghost Country - Travis Chase, #2 and Deep Sky - Travis Chase, #3.
Some scenes are very brutal and bloody and the hero of the story Travis Chase is aware of that but kills nonetheless without a lot of remorse even if some is not justified.

Review: Kill Plan

Kill Plan
Kill Plan by Eva Hudson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Nice, fast read. Not too much romance.
The case was very straightforward, no real twists or surprises. A should-have-been twist with the last killing was too obvious to surprise.
Ingrid also acts again most times alone, just asking other people to supply information, not very realistic (as in the first book).
For a short read recommended, also the romance goes in a direction I really like, but also I thought this would be the direction even in the first book.
For a break between longer and better books recommended.

Review: Broadchurch: A Novel

Broadchurch: A Novel
Broadchurch: A Novel by Erin Kelly

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Saw the TV-Series first, so I knew the how-dunnit and it was still a good book, even without the suspense.
As with the UK-TV-Series, binge-watched from Blu-ray in 2 days, the focus is on all the victims this crime has, and not so much on the killer. Still, I did not guess who the killer was in the TV-series.
Compared to the show, the book is less subtle, you get more insight in the actions and more background, to name just one, which was for me muddled and unclear in the show: Lucy. Maybe I was not watching with the same concentration with which I read a book and I missed some details, to name it here, would be to spoil both the book and more so the show, for those who have not read the book nor seen the show.
As a standalone, without the TV-show it is a good book, maybe for some not worth 5 stars, but as an addition to the TV-show it is great.
Highly recommended for fans of UK scenery (Dorset), UK-TV-shows and to anyone who has watched or will watch Broadchurch or the US-remake Gracepoint (although they are supposed to change some of the story, I watched the first 2 episodes and they where nearly identical to Broadchurch, which makes me question the point of a remake, they even put David Tennant in the same character in the US-version).

Review: Silenced

Silenced
Silenced by Allison Brennan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great story, but not enough twists. Romance was just in the right amount. Very small sex-scene.
Story was straightforward, no real surprises, well, one little. Fast read, very good paced.
Highly recommended, but no 5 star.

Review: Exit Strategy

Exit Strategy
Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

And again I had trouble wading through a rather boring book.
No suspense, one little twist, a nice showdown, and then it drags again for a few pages.
I wanted to add the author to my pile of good authors, but this ain't it.
This is about hit-men and -women banding together with their teacher to hunt down a former hit-man turned would-like-to-be serial killer.
They have too much dialogue, boring stakeouts and hunt, with enough false information being hunted down to make the book even longer.
Too long, to boring, no suspense and I did not really like all characters, the decisions they make or do not make are drawn out and they try to "do the right thing" - like not killing innocent bystanders, children etc. - wow, I would not really care for that, if I where a killer, I would relish every dead body, no matter how old it was, 1 or 99 or anywhere in between. Also, a good hit-man would not think so much. And innocent by standers? Talk about an oxymoron. No one is innocent.
Paint dries with more suspense.
So, nothing to save that book, 2 stars it is for a good idea. Not recommended and I will not read the other books in this series anytime soon - if ever.
Might not even read a book by this author anytime.

Review: Avogadro Corp

Avogadro Corp
Avogadro Corp by William Hertling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Read most of the book September 23d till 29th, 2014.
Just as I looked for the book in my Kindle, I had bought it more than 2 years ago, they updated it with a new version.
Maybe 5 stars is too much, regarding character development, and the Author states that was improved in this version (still laking, but the main story more than makes up for it). So if the first ebook-version had problems, I only read the second, words and grammar where ok, but I still saw one or two mistakes (words in the wrong order in a sentence, or a short word missing).
I will try to read the next books in the series soon, [b:A.I. Apocalypse|15288278|A.I. Apocalypse (Singularity, #2)|William Hertling|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1339083531s/15288278.jpg|19065889] and [b:The Last Firewall|18305964|The Last Firewall (Singularity #3)|William Hertling|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1376236926s/18305964.jpg|25798891] and write a better (maybe longer) review after finishing the 3d book. If it is supposed to be the last (I am not sure).

Highly recommended book about the release of an Artificial Intelligence.

Influenced by Ray Kurzweil, he even gets mentioned both in the book and in the Author's Note in the end.
As John Brunner based [b:The Shockwave Rider|41070|The Shockwave Rider|John Brunner|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386921650s/41070.jpg|868164] on the non-fiction view of the future of Alvin Toffler [b:Future Shock|466537|Future Shock|Alvin Toffler|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1175007455s/466537.jpg|280121], this books is based on the writings of Ray Kurzweil [b:The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology|83518|The Singularity is Near When Humans Transcend Biology|Ray Kurzweil|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348757857s/83518.jpg|1080] and others.

Review: Under The Final Moon

Under The Final Moon
Under The Final Moon by Hannah Jayne

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Struggling to read, Sophie gets on my nerves and there is not enough of the Vamps (Nina and Vlad).
Sophie comes across more whiney and unsure than ever, or maybe I am just not in the mood and fett up with the series.
Reading the other reviews this may end up to be a 2 stars, too much misery and not enough story.
And well, it might be the last, a bad ending or the last one for me in this series. But so far I am not nearly at the end, so I'll wait and see...
Wow struggling on, reading way better books in between and am now at 70% nearing the end and cannot wait to put it away.
After getting this far, I ask myself wether the other books in the series where really that better or if I had changed.
Without reading them again, I cannot say for sure.
But this book feels too long and as with other books I get the impression that the author gets paid per word-/page-count, which just does not produce anything a reader like me wants (for nearly the same reason I do not read Stephen King).
This could have worked better in a much shorter way, like a novella. Or by killing Sophie in the beginning, or whatever else good comes to mind.
As it is, her bad self-image, no decisions-making attitude and her whiney, tear-filled moods are killing me. And destroy my wanting to read another book in this series or another book by this author. And this is a book I preordered and was looking forward to ... I shudder to think of it.

Although near the end, I just had to read a different, better book before closing this for good (or bad, or whatever).
Choosing from my huge virtual ebook stack of paid for but yet unread books: [b:Kiss Me, Kill Me|8401387|Kiss Me, Kill Me (Lucy Kincaid #2)|Allison Brennan|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1394495620s/8401387.jpg|13261409], a realistic romantic suspense-thriller.

Having finished it, it was too long with no real story, bad or no twists (if you call the ending a twist).
The ending was ok, but could not save the book, as it was accompanied with more self-doubt and whining about her decision (and inner monologue).
So, I hope this series will not get another book.
Not recommended, except for closing the series or die-hard fans. In looking back at the other books of the series I am not sure wether I gave them too much credit. Maybe I have changed. And this gets 2 stars and a promise to myself not to read another book by this writer anytime soon.
This should have been a short 2-3 read, but the 25 days from start to finish reflect how much I struggled to read this book.
As it was pre-ordered and paid for, and once I got over the 30% barrier I also hated to abandon it. As it is: a time-consuming mistake not to abandon it.
